Workplace Health Needs Assessment is a systematic review of the health and wellbeing issues facing your business. It will ascertain your company’s health needs and assist in identifying the type and level of resource and service required to meet those needs. The process may raise issues, highlight gaps in service provision, identify problem areas and also encourage the engagement employees and management. The process will enable Unity to provide your business with a selection of options that can be part of the Occupational Health Service that can be provided by our team.

The needs assessment will help in the following ways

  • Establish your business profile, identifying the nature of the business and the employee demographics
  • Identify areas in which your organisation already has positive wellbeing interventions
  • Enable identification of areas where health improvements might be beneficial
  • Identify priorities of service and available resources
  • Plan a workforce wellness strategy in line with the business culture
  • Analyse absence trends and reasons for absence
  • Review risk assessments and risk reduction measures
  • Review polices that are in place and any that may need creation or alteration
  • Help to consider needs of any vulnerable groups (e.g., those with underlying health issues)
  • Ensure that surveillance is in place where exposures to work hazards requires it and that it complies with H&S legislation, meeting industrial standards in your sector
  • Facilitate development of relevant training
  • Establish on-going monitoring and review requirements

The aim is to improve overall workforce wellbeing.  This in turn will assist morale, attendance and productivity as well as potentially reduce staff turnover and associated costs.

What is involved in a Workplace Needs Assessment?

An Occupational Health Needs assessment involves our team meeting with key personnel to enable us to understand the organisational structure, objectives and culture. This often involves senior management, Human Resources, Health & Safety, Employee Reps and Union Reps where applicable. We aim to understand the demographic nature of the work force and obtain an understanding of current absence trends, work related injuries, long term health issues. In addition to this, we ask about general job roles, work processes and can look at equipment used and the work environment to understand any Hazard and Risk considerations. We would look at existing control measures and examine any policies and procedures in place and discuss any existing OH provision and records. Where existing Health records exist and subject to the necessary Data Protection issues, it would be useful for us to have a look at the extent of any available existing records.

It is also important for us to understand at this stage your expectations and long-term aspirations for the service.  From this Needs Assessment, Unity will be able to agree with you the service level required and will cost the provision based on this needs assessment.

How long does the assessment take?

We usually like to allow for a couple of hours to half day to conduct the assessment and dependant on the size of the organisation and site, some assessments will be quicker than others, with a further half day to compile the needs assessment report.

The outcome of the needs review not only provides a platform for designing or realigning occupational health provision to ensure that an organisation is fully compliant with relevant legislation, but also provides expert advice on cost-effective and targeted occupational health service delivery, which incorporates best practice alongside any new initiatives to add value to an organisation and provide a return on investment.

An occupational health needs assessment can also be undertaken for a single individual whom you have concerns about and would encompass

  • An analysis of their job, the work processes and their associated potential hazards
  • The demands of the job – both physical and psychological
  • Assessing how an individual’s health may affect the work
  • Assessing how the work may affect the employee’s health – potential adverse effects on an existing health condition
  • Identifying when specific fitness standards are required and why
  • Consideration of special cases – age, pregnancy, disability.
